In a time when the government, and even white Christianity, affirmed the bondage of Black Americans in slavery, the enslaved faithful found freedom in Jesus — a freedom that gave thousands the courage to run away and many more the ability to assert their personhood over and against what the rest of the world claimed. Their music still resonates with us today. Modern-day prophets? We may not know their names, but their music still resonates.
