Carol Hockin is the director of operations of The Acme Thrift Store and Food Pantry (ACTS).
Raised on a farm near Williamsburg, as a child Carol learned the practice of providing necessities for those in need. Inspired by her parents’ empathy and their willingness to help others, Carol’s life focus is centered on compassion and generosity.

Carol joined the ACTS board of directors in 2004 and transitioned into store operational work in 2005. Throughout her years of service, she has found that the fulfillment gained from supporting her community far outweighs the effort involved. She identifies ACTS as her passion.

Founded in 2002 as a 501c3 non-profit organization, the ACTS facility is just west of Williamsburg at 8925 M-72 east. ACTS has three paid staff members and approximately 70 volunteers. 

ACTS Thrift Store – Quality Merchandise at Affordable Prices

 

 

 

 

Revenue from the sale of donated items covers all of ACTS’ overhead and 30 percent of food costs. Other funding sources include donations from area churches, organizations and individuals. A wide variety of merchandise is available, including gently worn, clean clothing, shoes, furniture, home accessories, tools, kitchen and cooking necessities, and a variety of games, toys, and other articles for children. Thrift Store hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Donations to the Thrift Store can dropped off Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

ACTS Food Pantry —

 ACTS provided more than $137,000 for food for the needy in 2025

In addition to the nutritious food supplied by Food Rescue of Northwest Michigan and food donated by other supporters, in 2025 ACTS provided more than $137,000 for food that was generated by proceeds from the Thrift Store. 

Food Rescue is a program of Goodwill Northern Michigan. This regional distribution system encompasses more than 210 food donors, including 82 local farms. Fresh produce is delivered by Food Rescue to more than 70 area food pantries. 

The ACTS Food Pantry provides a wide variety of perishable and nonperishable food.  Groceries are distributed based on need and made available by appointment. The pantry is open each Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday from 

1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  In addition to food, the ACTS Food Pantry provides personal hygiene products and cleaning supplies for adults, children and infants.  Clients utilizing the food pantry can access food and supplies twice monthly and are restricted to limited quantities.

Client Financial Assistance – a new program providing monetary support

In 2025 ACTS initiated a new program to help qualified individuals and families in need of financial assistance. Last year’s financial help from ACTS totaled nearly $45,000 (paid directly to vendors) to help cover housing evictions, utility bills, or other unexpected household expenses.  More than $62,000 is budgeted for this program in 2026.
