Congregation Approves Contract for Construction;
Renovation to Begin
The Central United Methodist Church congregation again has demonstrated full support
for the “Central to Our Future” renovations to make our building more accessible and
welcoming to all. At a Church Conference on Sunday, March 22, the congregation voted
unanimously to approve a contract with Cunningham-Limp to remodel the sanctuary,
renovate the west entrance with an elevator, and create an accessible, gender-neutral
restroom on the second floor.
“At our core, we are a congregation of radical hospitality. We believe everyone should
be able to worship and participate fully,” said Tracy Cleveland, vice chair of Central’s
Church Council.
The construction contract approved by the congregation includes construction costs not
to exceed $4.2 million. Central’s Campaign Committee so far has received gift
commitments of $3.2 million toward our $3.5 million goal. This includes nearly 200 gifts,
many over multiple years. Fundraising continues. The Central UMC Church Council and
Finance Committee are working on a plan to cover the remainder of construction costs,
including using some proceeds from the upcoming sale of the Traverse Bay United
Methodist Church building.
Also last Sunday, the congregation voted unanimously to authorize Central Church’s
Building Committee to engage in a bank loan or line of credit, if needed, for up to $1
million. This would be used for cash flow purposes during construction and while
monetary gifts are received over time.
Just before he led the congregation in prayer, Cleveland reminded the Church
Conference participants, “The work we are about to do is guided by universal
accessibility; radical hospitality and inclusion; flexible, participatory worship; mission-
aligned, financially responsible design; and faithful stewardship of resources.”
With these votes by the congregation, construction can begin this spring. Construction
is set to start in early May, and a groundbreaking ceremony is being planned. Stay
tuned for more details on the groundbreaking, as well as logistical information for using
our building during construction.
Earlier in March, the Western Waters District of the United Methodist Church approved
Central’s plans. At the Church Conference meeting, the Rev. Jodie Flessner, district
superintendent, also endorsed the plans and commended the many members of the
congregation who have worked diligently over months and years to make these plans.
