It seems like love has a bad rap lately. Have you noticed? 

It’s a stigma, really. Love is seen as “too kind” or “too weak” to be a firm foundation. Perhaps a home can be built on love. But a church? A society? Politics? Government? Do these need a different law? Perhaps a higher law?

For Jesus, there is no higher law. In fact, for Jesus there is no other law! 

“Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” 

Jesus said: “‘You shall LOVE the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall LOVE your neighbor as yourself.’” Matthew 22:36-39.

THEREFORE, Love is not spineless – it is BOLD. It is a call to action. It is risky and profoundly political. It is not neutral. It can revolutionize our community. And it is just exactly what is needed in a world overwhelmed with divisive political speech and action. Every action worth doing in and for our community has at its deepest root the foundation of LOVE.

Want some examples where we’ve seen love BOLDLY demonstrated in our community? Can you add your own? 

• When we welcome those fleeing war, we show BOLD love. When we welcome Ukrainians, as well as those from Afghanistan (both Christian and Muslim) who aided US war and peace efforts, we demonstrate love. When we welcome Haitian students and advocate for legal status for migrant farm workers, we start to create a world Jesus might consider the beginnings of God’s reign on earth. 
• When we light the community menorah each year in the town square, we demonstrate love. For several years now, Jewish and non-Jewish community members have joined together in solidarity to commemorate the Jewish festival of lights. 
• When Christians and others partner with our small population of Muslim neighbors to make sure there are spaces to pray and groceries appropriate to Muslim religious beliefs, we demonstrate love in action.
• When we walk the path of Christ with migrant neighbors, we show the love of solidarity.. On Good Friday last year, commemorating the path Christ took to the cross, Anglo community members joined with the local Spanish-speaking Catholic Chapel to walk the stations of the cross for migrants. 
• When all students are given opportunities to learn, with food in their bellies, safe from bullying we witness love expressed for our next generation. When students have all the supplies they need and those with disabilities are treated with as much attention and respect as the highest performing students, we see love transform individual lives and systems that work for all people. 
• When we work together, every political persuasion, to grow and distribute healthy foods and to feed and shelter those without adequate housing, all the while advocating for creative solutions to our housing shortage – we see the transformative power of leading our community with the ethic of BOLD LOVE.
