Mission’s Spotlight June 2025: After The Storm
Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by. Psalm 57:1-2

Mission Statement: We are a faith-based organization that partners with local communities and survivors to deliver compassionate disaster case management after the storm.
What we do:
When a disaster strikes, it affects the entire community. After the Storm workers help provide long-term solutions for housing as needed, and through case-by-case planning, a path for reconstruction is established one family at a time. With compassionate hearts, After the Storm navigators focus on the needs of those affected by a purposeful plan that mirrors Christ’s love and grace. After the Storm works to set recovery goals that include important essentials such as food, shelter, grants and loans for home reconstruction, and care for those who have suffered trauma and in need of wellness support.
Our Beginnings:
Founded in 2022, After the Storm is a non-profit 501c3 humanitarian organization that provides relief for human and natural disasters. The organization was launched by the Michigan Conference of the United Methodist Church and is a recipient of UMCOR funds. Its work is initiated through the United Methodist Church and is a division of the General Board of Global Ministries. After the Storm currently has offices in Grand Rapids, Lansing, Detroit, and Kalamazoo. Midland resident Nancy Money has been the executive director since the inception of After the Storm. She has years of experience with disaster recovery organizations and is a dedicated leader.
How we’ve made a difference:
After the Storm volunteers and case managers have provided relief for these Michigan disasters:
- The 2021 floods in the Detroit area,
- Severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding in nine counties in western, central and eastern Michigan in 2023,
- The 2022 EF3 tornado that ravaged the Gaylord area and injured 44 people. More than 100 families were assisted by After the Storm.
- The 2024 tornado in the Kalamazoo County area that damaged 200 homes,
- In 2020, a major dam breach in the Great Lakes Bay Region that caused severe property damage.
